Marjolein Marx travels to landscapes that look striking at first sight and hold, just beneath that surface, a slow story of being reshaped by the earth and by a changing climate. From the canyons of the American West to the glaciers of South America, the work begins on location.
Each painting carries materials gathered on site, stones, sand and minerals, ground by hand into the pigment of the work. The landscape becomes part of the painting itself, a physical fragment of a place at one moment in time.

From the land into the work
Every painting starts on location. Stones, sand, and minerals collected on location are ground by hand into pigment. That pigment becomes the surface of the work, holding inside it a fragment of the landscape it came from.
