Bryce Canyon is a labyrinth of rust-colored hoodoos, sculpted year after year by ice, wind, and rain. The canyon is a living archive of geological time, and it keeps moving, faster now than it used to as the freeze-thaw cycles that build the spires shift with the warming winters.

For this work, stones from inside the canyon were ground by hand into the pigments of the painting. The rust and ochre of the canvas come from the rock itself. The painting carries a physical fragment of Bryce.

The portrait surfaces inside the contours of the canyon walls, made of the canyon's own materials.
