The Abyss Pool is a deep, crystal-blue geyser in Yellowstone, fed by the heat of an active supervolcano. The pool sits calm and deep, blue all the way down. The ground underneath is unstable enough that visitors stay on planks meters back from the water.

In this work, geyser stones, minerals, and sand from the surrounding basin were ground by hand into the pigments of the painting. The deep blue of the pool sits inside the work as a literal fragment of Yellowstone, carried into the canvas.

The SOUL version reads as landscape rather than portrait. The same place, painted in the same materials, with the geological surface allowed to dominate.
