Grand Prismatic Spring is the largest hot spring in the United States, ringed by orange and yellow microbial mats around a deep-blue center. The colors come from heat-loving microorganisms living at different temperatures around the pool, life that depends on a temperature band the planet is no longer holding steady. Steam rises constantly off the surface.

In this work, geyser stones from the surrounding basin were ground by hand into the pigments of the painting. The orange of the rim and the blue of the center sit on the canvas in the same proportions they hold in the spring itself. The portrait surfaces inside the spring's coloured rings.
