Grand Prismatic Spring is the largest hot spring in the United States, ringed by orange and yellow microbial mats around a deep-blue center. The colors come from heat-loving microorganisms living at different temperatures around the pool. Steam rises constantly off the surface.

In this work, geyser stones from the surrounding basin were ground by hand into the pigments of the painting. The orange of the rim and the blue of the center sit on the canvas in the same proportions they hold in the spring itself.

The SOUL version reads as landscape rather than portrait. The same place, painted in the same materials, with the spring's color rings allowed to dominate.
