The Marble Caves of Lago General Carrera are pure calcium carbonate, polished smooth by six thousand years of moving water. Light reflects off the turquoise lake and back into the marble, washing the white walls in blue. Erosion and a steady increase in tourism are reshaping them in real time.
The work sits at the intersection of fragile and luminous. Marble dust and lake-edge minerals are ground into the pigment. The white and blue of the cave hold the structure of the painting, with a portrait surfacing in the curves the water has carved.
